Binary Beading at Intel Museum and Mother's day crafts

About a month ago our science group had been to Intel Museum. They have kid-friendly displays of

  • Computer timeline and history.
  • Intel history which includes facts about the founders Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore (the kids have even memorized Moore's Law!!!)
  • Microprocessor chips (actual size and enlarged ones to show the various units)
  • Evolution of the microprocessors.
  • What are semiconductors(This one has insulator, conductor materials to test : picture below).
  • A robot named Arti whom you could ask a certain set of questions.
  • A display that would tell how many nanoseconds it took you to move your hand across the screen (this is to give an idea of what a nanosecond is).
  • How fast data can travel for a given internet connection type.
  • Make your name using binary code.
  • Intel fabrication facilities and bunny suits(you need to visit the museum to try it!)

Hands-on Science classes :
Intel also offers free 30-45 minute hands-on science lab classes for elementary kids, these help them understand some of the concepts of computer in a fun way. We enrolled our science group kids for the sessions and the one that we attended this mother's day weekend was Binary Beading.
Binary Beading :
The kids got to know that computer stores information in terms of 0's and 1's. They did an activity of beading their initials in 0 and 1 beads in a keychain, this was a take home project. Then they used worksheet to represent a 3 letter word in binary. They exchanged their papers and guessed the words.

All the kids enjoyed the session and the visit, they are eagerly waiting the next session on Schematics, Switches and Circuits.

Mother's Day Craft activities :
As if the excitement at Intel was not enough for our kids, we visited a nearby Lakeshore learning store. They have craft activities for kids on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and this one was to make art for mom. There were tables set all over the store and each one had a different activity like making bracelets and necklaces, bouquets, jewelery holder and cards. This was the outcome of the 1.5 hr spent at the store:
